  • Rolls – We use long steak rolls that fit the sausages, but you could use hot dog buns, round rolls, steak rolls, or any bread you like. Cook until the sausage, peppers, and onions have a nice char.

The skins will be slightly brown and charred.

The onions and pepers should be slighlty charred and softened.

To serve, scoop out a portion of peppers and onions and place in a roll and then place a sausage in each bun.

Serving

Air fryer Italian sausage and peppers work really well in a soft long bun.

Why soft?

If you use a harder roll, like a French bagette or crusty Italian roll, when you bite into it, you can squeeze the sausage, peppers, and onions out the other end.

Using a soft roll helps you better keep the sausage and peppers in place.

You can top the sausage and onions with your favorite condiments, like mustard, ketchup, or a homemade tomato sauce.

You could also chop up the Italian sausage, peppers, and onions and place them in an Italian sauce and serve it over pasta.

Storing

Sausage, peppers, and onions is always best fresh from the air fryer, but you can store it for later if you prefer.

Place the sausage, peppers, and onions into an air tight container.

They should stay fresh for about 3 to 4 days.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can add as many Italian sausages as you can fit into the air fryer basket, but you should make sure to leave some room so they do not touch. The air needs to be able to circulate around them fully.
  • Make sure to flip the sausage half-way through cooking. Most air fryers have a warning bell that goes off about halfway through cooking, so that is ussually a good time to flip the sausages.
  • You can fill the bottom of the air fryer basket with peppers and onions but try to avoid over-stuffing the bottom. You want some space for air to flow around the peppers and onions.
  • For safety, make sure to cook the air fryer Italian sausage to at least 165 degrees before serving.
  • For added flavor, you can toast your rolls with a bit of butter or olive oil before serving.
  • Use your favorite condiments to add extra flavor to the sausage and peppers.
